چکیده

The arteriovenous uptake differences for glucose, lactate, pyruvate, />'hydroxybutyrate, and acetoacetate were measured in vessels across squa mine, cell carcinomas in ten selected patients with tumors of the head and neck. All tumors measured took up glucose, pyruvate, 0-hydroxybutyrate, and acetoacetate. They could either produce, take up, or main tain a constant level of lactate. These tumors demonstrate a heterogeneous affinity for various metabolites, including ketone bodies which are ele vated in the nutritionally depleted, tumor-burdened patient.

Comparison of Absorbed Dose in Thyroid and Lens as Organs at Risk Between in vivo Dosimetry and 3-D Treatment Planning Calculation in Head and Neck Radiotherapy by Linac Beam

Introduction: Critical organs and structures may receive significant amounts of irradiation even if they are not the target of radiotherapy or located outside the treatment field. Although the sensitive thyroid gland and lens are not directly the targets of treatment, they can be affected by irradiation during the treatment of tumours in head and neck region. The purpose of thi...

Assessment of Olfactory Threshold in Patients Undergoing Radiotherapy for Head and Neck Malignancies

Introduction: Radiotherapy is a common treatment modality for patients with head and neck malignancies. As the nose lies within the field of radiotherapy of the head and neck, the olfactory fibers and olfactory receptors may be affected by radiation. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in olfactory threshold in patients with head and neck malignancies who have received radiation to th...

Assessment of a 2D EPID-based Dosimetry Algorithm for Pre-treatment and In-vivo Midplane Dose Verification

Introduction: The use of electronic portal imaging devices (EPIDs) is a method for the dosimetric verification of radiotherapy plans both pretreatment and in-vivo. The aim of this study was to test a 2D EPID-based dosimetry algorithm for dose verification of some plans inside a homogenous and anthropomorphic phantom and in-vivo, as well. Materials and Methods: </strong...

Glucose uptake, perfusion, and cell proliferation in head and neck tumors: relation of positron emission tomography to flow cytometry.

The uptake of 18F-Deoxyglucose (FDG) was studied in vivo in relation to the proliferation rate of human head and neck tumors. Forty-two patients with histologically proven squamous-cell carcinoma of the head and neck and four patients with metastases of head and neck tumors were examined with PET and FDG prior to surgery. In 35 of these patients, a flow cytometric analysis of the DNA content an...
